Jill Scott's mom Joyce Scott gave birth to Jill on the 4th of April, 1972, at Philadelphia Pennsylvania. She was raised by her grandmother and she was an only child. Scott studied at her school, the Philadelphia High School for Girls. After graduation, she attended Temple University. Between two work as a teacher, she was studying secondary education. She was hoping to be a English teacher in high school. After three years of being teacher's assistant and studying, her dream to become a high school English teacher came to a halt. She started her career singing live poetry and performing her own work. In the end, she teamed up along with Amir Quest Thompson, a member of The Roots. They were able to collaborate in writing You Got Me. In the Roots performance, she declared her artist status. She then secured collaborations, which included Eric Benet Will Smith, and Common. Additionally, she gained experience as a performer in her participation in the Canada tour of the Broadway musical production Rent. She signed as the label's first artist.
